For Angela...

I felt kind of bad because people in the world are being treated this badly even though they did nothing wrong and they are the victims for doing nothing wrong.  I also found it a little bit disturbing because some white people are miss treating the natives because of their skin colour to the point where they don’t want to be native anymore. The whole thing kind of freaked me out because there was no one there to stand up and defend them..... But in the end I think they did the right thing going to the principle of the school and confronting them with what happened.

Heirtage Fair Essay

Superman Essay

-Introduction-

Superman was an invention of two men.  One was a Canadian-born artist named Joseph Shuster and the other his friend, Jerry Siegel.  “Superman” is a cartoon character who is a superhero and he also has another identity as a mild mannered newspaper reporter named “Clark Kent”. Superman can fly, shoot lasers from his eyes, freeze objects with his breathe and he has superhuman strength.  His only weakness is kryptonite.

Past

Joseph Shuster was born in Toronto, Ontario to a Jewish family. As a youngster, Shuster worked as a newspaper boy for the Toronto Daily Star and, as a hobby, he liked to sketch.  When Joe Shuster was 10, his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. In Cleveland, Shuster attended Glenville High School and befriended his later collaborator, writer Jerry Siegel

Jerry Siegel was born in Cleveland, Ohio and attended Glenville High School where he met Joe Shuster. Siegel was a fan of movies, comic strips, and especially science fiction pulp magazines. Siegel described his friendship with the similarly shy and bespectacled Shuster: "When Joe and I first met, it was like the right chemicals coming together.”

Jerry Siegel developed the story lines, while Joe Shuster drew the comic strip. The idea of Superman came to Jerry Siegel while reading a book called “Gladiator” written by Phillip Wylie. The character in the story had the ability of super strength, was able to leap 40 feet in the air and could let bullets bounce off his chest.  This along with other characters inspired the creation of Superman.

Highlights

The two men originally developed Superman as a villain during the 1930s, but they later made him a superhero. Lex Luthor became the first villain created in the Superman comic book.  He is the archenemy of Superman. Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, he first appeared in Action Comics #23 (April 1940). Luthor is described as "a power-mad, evil scientist" of high intelligence and incredible technological power.

What?

In 1936, the partners unsuccessfully attempted to make Superman into a daily comic strip. After this failure, the two men found employment with DC-National Comics (present-day DC Comics). In 1939, DC Comics agreed to publish Superman as a storyline in Action Comics. Superman appeared in the very first issue of this comic. Superman also appeared in various radio serials, television programs, films, newspaper strips, and video games.  Superman was so popular and he helped to create the superhero genre.  Superman proved to be DC Comics most important and popular character, and made a lot of money for the company. During the 1940s, Siegel and Shuster sued DC Comics for a portion of the profits. The two men achieved a minor victory. They received royalties for Superboy instead, another character that they had created. The partners as a result had to forsake all rights to the Superman character.

Today a superman No. 1 comic is worth $440,000 in near mint condition. In 1933 each superman comic sold for 10 cents a copy.

So what?

Superman helped those of us who have an imagination to enjoy a fantasy of a young man who could save the world and come to every ones rescue in the nick of time. He gives us some great dreams and entertainment.  The creation of Superman showed the world that a talented Canadian artist can succeed on the world’s stage and earn a place in history. Canada can be proud to have been part of such a popular, well known creation.

Now what?

The potential of national pride and its effects on the nation’s population caused by the knowledge of being a part of Superman's creation can have many positive results in Canada’s future. Superman and his creators will help all of Canadian children by inspiring them to believe, create and use their imagination.  Superman will live on to inspire children of all ages throughout the ages, and be a great source of entertainment for everyone.

Conclusion

Many children have spent countless hours running around pretending to be a superhero and having awesome powers and having plenty of fun. Superman created the superhero fad of today.  Without Superman being the first superhero there probably wouldn't be any comics today about superheros.

Superman’s popularity is still very strong and his memorabilia is in high demand as collectibles. I sometimes wonder what if Superman wouldn’t have been created, would superheros be as popular as they are today?

Similarities between Greg Heffley and Pony-Boy Curtis

By:Aaron Vukelic

Pony-Boy and Greg Heffley are two very different people. Pony-Boy comes from a place where poverty and crime are common in daily life. Greg Heffley comes from an ideal family with caring parents who love him dearly. Even though they are two different people they do share some similarities. One of their similarities is that they are both “Dreamers”. Greg Heffley wants to be the most popular kid in his school and Pony-Boy really wants to have an ideal family.

Pony-Boy and Greg are very similar in the way that they both get bullied. Pony-Boy is bullied by the “Socs”. The “Socs” are always looking for “Greasers” to jump. Pony-Boy is jumped a couple of times throughout the book . The “Socs” are bullies for Pony-Boy because they are a gang that rides around in Mustang’s and “Tuff” cars and find the “Greasers”. Usually by themselves” and usually the “Greasers” loses because they are heavily outnumbered. Greg Heffley is bullied by his older brother Rodrick who is a teenager who picks on Greg because he is his sibling. I think Rodrick picks on Greg because he failed mostly throughout Middle-School and is not very smart and he doesn't want Greg to exceed him in life. Greg is also bullied at school by a girl named Patty ,she bullies Greg because he made fun of her in kindergarten and she never let that go. She is scorning him and trying to make his life as bad as possible during his years of Middle-School. Greg is also bullied by a couple of older guys because he provoked them by saying he would call the police on them. Greg also ruined the paint job on their truck with a weed-whacker by accident.

Pony-Boy and Greg Heffley are both just trying to fit in. Pony-Boy acts like a “Greaser” to fit in with his brothers he slicks his long greasy hair back. Greg Heffley is trying to fit in at school but it does not work out. He becomes one of the least popular kids in school because of his actions. Greg is a bad friend to his friend Rowley and his actions cost him in Middle-School. Both Pony-Boy and Greg try to fit in but things do not work out. Pony-Boy gets jumped and ends up getting beat up a lot. Greg does not become the most popular kid, in fact he become one of the least, but in the end he realizes what a good friend is and Greg and Rowley become the greatest of friends again.

I’ve noticed that neither Pony-Boy or Greg Heffley use their heads, they both do not think before they act. Pony-Boy cannot think straight in tight situations and Greg does not think before he acts. Pony-Boy can’t think straight when he is being mugged by the “Socs” or when he is trying to get away. Greg does not think when he decides to throw a football at Rowley while he is riding a tricycle or ignoring Rowly and hanging out with a boy named Freggly. Greg doesn’t realize what he is doing to Rowley is hurting him. Neither Greg or Pony-Boy think before they act and they both end up paying for it in the end.

Even though Greg Heffley comes from a friendly town and Pony-Boy comes from a more dangerous part of the city they are very similar in the way that they are both bullied from where they are from. They both try hard to fit in, Pony-Boy with his buddies and Greg with his schoolmates. The boys really want a better life for themselves and seem to go about it the wrong way. They both seem very insecure about the things that are going in their lives.

OutSider's Actors

Soda Pop Curtis

Soda Pop Curtis is the oldest of the three brothers out of the group. He has been best friends with Steve Randle since Grade school. He is a “Greaser”, He is tall, roughly six foot two has dark gold hair and dark brown eyes. He tries to stay out of trouble, has never cracked a book, meaning he doesn’t read any books. Both his parents are dead, Soda Pop Curtis stands up for Pony-Boy when he is being yelled at or bullied by the other “Greasers” (“Leave my kid brother alone you hear?”). I Think Jude Law should play the role of Soda Pop Curtis because he is a very good actor and they look a lot alike with their “movie star good looks” and blonde hair.

Johnny Cade

Johnny Cade is the “Greasers” pet and is everyones “Kid Brother”. The “Greasers” made Johnny their pet because they felt bad because his father would beat him and his mother would ignore him. Johnny has been jumped by the “Socs” ever since ,Johnny carries a blade with him. Johnny reminds Pony-Boy of a puppy that's been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers. I picked Xavier Samuel because he fits Johnny Cade’s description in the book “The Outsiders”

Dally Winston

Dally Winston is the trouble maker in the “Greasers” and was arrested at the age of 10. Dally likes to blow off his anger by getting in gang fights. Dally is truly the most dangerous member in the “Greasers”. The police have a large file on Dally because he has been put in the “Cooler” to many times. I chose Nicolas Cage as Dally Winston because to me he is a trouble maker and he fits Dally Winston’s description.

Two-Bit Matthews

Two-Bit Matthew’s real name is Kieth but nobody remembers it because everyone calls him Two-Bit. Two-Bit is the oldest of the gang he got his name because he always had to get his last two-Bits in. Two-Bit hardly takes life seriously, he goes to school for fun and likes getting with blonde's. Two-Bit carries a switch blade and shop lifts and has Grey eyes. I chose Johnny Knoxville Because he is a funny actor and one of my favorites, he is a perfect match for Two-Bit Matthews

Darrel Curtis

Darrel has been taking care of the family ever since Mr. and Mrs. Curtis died in a car wreck. A judge allows the brothers to stay together under Darry's supervision as long as they stay out of trouble. Rather than go to college on a football scholarship, Darry has to go to work in order to keep the three together and Pony boy in school. He has had to give up a lot and has become an adult too fast.

Pony-Boy Curtis

Pony-Boy is one of “The Greasers” he has redish-brown hair and his eye’s are a greenish-grey. Pony-Boy does not like to get in fights and tries to stay out of trouble. Pony-Boy is the youngest of the 3 brother’s. Pony-Boy likes to read and watch movies by himself. Pony-Boy doesn't use his head, meaning he doesn’t think. I chose Rupert Grint because he is a good actor and he looks like Pony-Boy in “The Outsiders”

Victim Impact Statement

Friday, December 17th
By: Aaron Vukelic
Victim Impact Statement

Your honour, my daughter Dawn-Marie Wesley was victimized by 3 girls who had been her friends.  In the past few years, she was bullied in school, outside of school, and even in her own home. The 3 girls sent threatening messages over the phone, and even threatened her at school. One of the threats the girls had said to my daughter Dawn was, “your f---ing dead!” The 3 girl’s continued calling Dawn name’s and threatening her up to the point until she felt that there was only one way out for her. This was to kill herself in her room by hanging herself with a dog leash.  She thought if she were to ask for help it would only cause more problems for her and it would only get worse day by day.

My daughter Dawn-Marie was bullied to the point where she committed suicide. When my daughter Dawn-Marie came home, she looked very sullen and quiet.  She seemed quite upset and I asked her if she wanted to talk about it. Dawn replied “no” and she went upstairs to her room quietly. Later I sent my son upstairs to go get Dawn down for dinner, moments later I heard a loud scream coming from upstairs. I ran up the stairs as fast as I could to see what my son was screaming about. I found him crying and pointing to Dawn’s bedroom.   I went inside not knowing what to expect and there I saw my daughter hanging in her closet by the dog’s leash. I was so traumatized that I ran downstairs and quickly phoned “911”. Dawn-Marie left a note before she had killed herself saying “if I try to ask for help, it will only get worse. They are always looking for a new person to beat up and they are the toughest girls. If I ratted, they would get suspended and there would be no stopping them. I love you all so much”. Those were my Daughter Dawn-Marie’s last word’s before she decided to hang herself.  The death of my daughter will never be forgotten by the family and friends of the Wesley’s. It had affected me, my husband and son greatly with depression and longing, because we have lost a very much loved one that could have easily been saved if we had only known of her problems that she was facing every day.  Dawn Marie was a well loved member of our community who everyone cared about.

In my opinion the girl’s involved in this horrible event should be separated from their classmates and friends so that this will never happen again.  I think they should all have to go to classes about bullying and behaviour modification focused on bullying of other’s so that they will be able to act appropriately and never cause other’s to have suicidal thoughts. These girls need to be made to realize that there action’s can cause real harm and anguish to those they are targeting as their victim’s when they are bullying.  I also think they should be banned from ways of communication such as texting, online websites like FaceBook, Twitter and MSN until they have passed their classes and proven they can act appropriately.

So in closing your honour... I feel that although these girls were responsible for the death of my only daughter, deep inside, I feel that these girls did not mean any harm.  How were they to have known that my daughter would take her own life?  I have talked to these girls and they are deeply sorry for their actions and bad choices and they are sad for the loss of my daughter.  For this reason I have decided to forgive them for their actions.  I feel that it is best to forgive them so that they may learn from their mistakes and go on with their lives and be better individuals in this world. We need to get on with our lives as well and may Dawn rest in peace.

Summary on Bullying

Dead Girl’s Mother Hugs Bully B.C. Teenager

Ian Bailey

We need to learn to stop bullying.

17 year old girl bullied a 14 year old girl to her death whose name was Dawn-Marie.  The 17 year old girl is at a sentencing circle 75km north of Vancouver. The 17 year old girl’s punishment is 18month’s of probation and a six month ban from her cell phone, the judge had also ordered a 750 word essay on bullying, also the judge ordered her to attend counselling and to perform 20 hours of community service.  She did not get sent to jail because they felt she would not learn her lesson there.  The crown noted that the offender was being held accountable for her words not the suicide.  Her little brother had found Dawn-Marie in her closet hung by a dog leash.  They had gone to a sentencing circle to discuss the bullies’ punishment because Dawn-Marie’s father is Native

Conclusion
·         What did you notice while using each ingredient?
·         Why do you think this occurred (use scientific language)?
·         Did everything go well during the lab? If no, what would you change next time?

1. I noticed that even though all of the ingredients were different it still increased the density of the water until the water was more dense then the egg causing it to float.
2. I think this occurred because the ingredients increased the density until the water became more dense then the egg causing it to float.
3. No everything did not go well in the lab because a past student from Fairhaven school came to help and talk to Mr.Catton and he broke an egg and it splattered everywhere.
